Frangible Ammunition for Training and Safety: The Good and The Bad
I've been using frangible ammunition exclusively at Valhalla for almost four years now. We've been through several different brands and experienced some interesting results along the way. Let me share some of them with you.

DPMS Panther Arms LRT-SASS Rifle
Simply put, the LRT-SASS is an AR-15 on steroids. It is larger in size, larger in caliber, and heavier in weight. The LRT-SASS I used for this review arrived in a padded “gun case” with the owner’s manuals, two 19-round magazines, one LRT with four position handguards with covers, Mangonel front/rear flip-up sights, a sling, and a Harris bipod—all in all, a ready-to-use package.

How to Evaluate Ammunition
Imagine for a moment that you are a law enforcement administrator who is responsible for evaluating ammunition for your agency. The decisions you make can have a profound effect on the safety of your sworn personnel and the civilian population that they serve. The same is true if you are an individual officer who is allowed to use personally owned firearms and ammunition on the job. You have a responsibility to select the best ammunition available.

Winchester Short-Range Training Ammo
Winchester Ammunition
The round requires a special M2 Training Bolt that changes the weapon from locked breach gas to straight blowback operation. Once the bolt is installed-—which takes about 30 seconds—-the weapon will work normally in semi- and full automatic operation. It works in standard 20-inch barrels and also in M4 carbines with short barrels. With the standard bolt installed an SRTA round will chamber and fire but the gun won’t cycle or extract.

Brenneke Tactical Home Defense Slug
Brenneke
The Tactical Home Defense shotgun slug from Brenneke is a new reduced-recoil load designed for home defense and law enforcement purposes. Reduced recoil loading makes it more comfortable for recoil-sensitive shooters and also allows quick and accurate follow-up shots. The slug has a flat trajectory to 50 yards, with an optimal power to 35 yards.

Ammunition: Bang for the Buck
One thing I, for one, never gave much thought to is the ammunition we are most likely issued by our respective departments. There are so many different brands, calibers, and performance characteristics to consider that it’s mind boggling.

Frangible Ammunition
Custom Cartridge
Custom Cartridge has developed a cartridge using a frangible bullet loaded to sub-sonic speed that is effective when striking human targets but breaks down into small particles when hard surfaces are hit. The "Hush" bullets do not ricochet and will not penetrate automobile sheet metal or aircraft skin.

Understanding Stopping Power
If I knew I'd be in a gunfight within the next 20 minutes, I'd be laying my hands on a 12-gauge. But the best I can predict is that, as an officer of the law, I might be in a gunfight sometime in my career. So I carry a handgun.
