Harley-Davidson will close its Buell subsidiary in East Troy, Wisc., which will result in the ceasing of production of the Buell Ulysses Police XB12XP motorcycle, BizTimes Daily reports.

Police Motorcycles: 2009
Officers patrolling for agencies that purchased motorcycles from the 2009 model year will be riding one of six models. Harley-Davidson, which began producing police motorcycles in 1908, offers the Road King and Electra Glide (identical engine with sidecar mounting). BMW's R1200 RT-P is a favorite of the California Highway Patrol and Los Angles Sheriff's Department. The company also offers the G650. In 2007, Honda began producing its ST1300, a compact, performance bike. And H-D subsidiary Buell began producing a police version of its Ulysses sportbike in late 2008. Roads can't contain that bike, which has already been put to use by several rural departments.

California Auctions Surplus CHP Vehicles
Five high-mileage BMW motorcycles used by the CHP were auctioned for $2,200 each. The motorcycles were from the 2002, 2003 and 2004 model years and had odometer readings of more than 100,000.

Troopers Report Many Motorcycle Riders to Blame For Fatal Collisions
New statistics from the Washington State Patrol show motorcycle riders are to blame in many fatal collisions. State troopers report 80 percent of fatal collisions are the fault of the rider and half of the accidents don't involve a second driver.

Even before Chief August Vollmer, who is credited with organizing the first official Police Motorcycle Patrol in the United States with the Berkeley (Calif.) Harley-Davidson launched an all-new Big Twin powertrain for the 2007 FLHTP Electra-Glide and FLHP Road King law enforcement motorcycles when the Twin Cam 103 Police engine and 6-speed Cruise Drive were introduced. This new engine, which is only available on law enforcement models, comes standard with Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI).
