More than 80 police officers from 40 departments around the U.S. will participate in the Vectrix Electric Motorcycle Challenge from April 28-30. The event will raise funds for the Spokes4Hope charity for abused children.

Glide Cruisers for Campus Patrol
The Defender is the base cruiser with a 48-volt motor, 15Ah Lithium battery, and 25-mile range. The Enforcer adds a higher-capacity battery (20Ah Lithium), extending the range to 30 miles. Both can reach a top speed of 32 mph.

Zero Upgrades Electric Motorcycles for 2011
The Zero S and Zero DS have been given a new look; and the street and dual sport models will become the world's first production electric motorcycles to feature a maintenance-free belt drive system. Zero has also increased the capacity of the power packs by 12.5% to extend the motorcycles' range.

California Agency Acquires Zero Electric Motorcycle
The Zero DS has a range of up to 50 miles and is highway legal. Each model employs proprietary Z-Force technology and an aircraft-grade aluminum frame to increase the bike's agility.

The Denver International Airport is utilizing Sentinel Police Mobility Vehicles from Xtreme Green Products. Officers use the electric vehicles to address the traffic flow of the airport.

NYPD to Deploy Electric Stand-Up Vehicles
The New York Police Department will be utilizing six T3 Series Electric Stand-up Vehicles from T3 Motion, Inc., part of a multi-unit purchase order shipped recently. The units will enable the department to increase patrol capabilities, especially in subways and crowded areas.

Vectrix VX-3 Electric Vehicle
The Los Angeles Police Department is now field-testing the Vectrix VX-3, a unique three-wheeled electric patrol vehicle that will be available in the spring. The LAPD is testing the scooter-type vehicle at the city's LA Live entertainment complex that includes Staples Center. The vehicle was debuted at the 2010 COPSWEST trade show. Photos by Paul Clinton.

Whereas the Dodge Charger and Ford Crown Victoria have been staple patrol cars in the United States, police agencies outside of the country use BMW, Subaru, Skoda and a variety of other automaker brands for officers on the job. Check out some of the more colorful international vehicles patrolling cities in Europe, Canada and other areas. In one instance, a Canadian agency is taking a progressive approach by using an electric vehicle.
