The suspect barricaded himself in a room of the hospital's thoracic center on the eighth floor of the hospital's Nelson Building. The shooter was reportedly upset about his mother's treatment at the hospital and shot the doctor in the stomach during surgery.

Ultimately as many as 200 officers from many LE agencies responded to the mutual aid calls for assistance. A number of SWAT teams answered the call and worked the inner perimeter.
