A North Charleston police officer shot in the abdomen during a standoff Monday was likely saved from more serious injury by his ballistic vest, according to North Charleston Deputy Chief David Cheatle. Officer Wayne Pavlischeck has now been released from the hospital.

Video: South Carolina Deputy Shot Multiple Times in Friday Gunfight
There was a gunfight between Gist and a suspect identified as Travis Cantelle Smith, 36, authorities report. It's not clear if Gist hit Smith during the exchange, but Gist was hit at least three times. Some of the shots hit her body armor.
