California's No. 2 Sheriff's Agency Begins Massive Layoffs
Riverside County (Calif.) Sheriff Stan Sniff has mailed layoff notices to 800 full-time staffers and will begin implementing layoffs of deputies June 1 to help close budget gaps plaguing the county. The cuts could also cause reductions in jail operations.

Third Largest N.J. City Lays Off 125 Officers
The Paterson (N.J.) Police Department has laid off a fourth of its force, resulting in protests by a crowd of officers from the agency. The officers took to city hall today to protest the 125 layoffs that were finalized Monday in the state's third largest city.

Calif. City Outsources Police Services to Sheriff
The Half Moon Bay City Council voted Saturday to shut down its police department and contract out its law enforcement services to the San Mateo Sheriff's Department. The move is expected to save the cash-strapped city $509,000.

Michigan State Police Close 21 Posts
Under this new "regional policing plan," the agency will reduce the number of fully operational posts from 62 to 29. The agency is making the reductions to close a $20.7-million budget cut it faces next fiscal year.
