Vermont Sheriff Named To Late Wife's Job
Sgt. Ray Allen took over as sheriff of Grand Isle County, Vt., on Wednesday with mixed emotions — grateful for the opportunity, yet sad to replace the prior sheriff. Sheriff Allen has taken over a job left open when the former sheriff, and his wife, took her own life earlier this summer.

Camden Police Director Resigns After Council Nixes Appointment
Camden's Mayor Dana Redd hired Lanuel J. Ferguson, a high-ranking member of the New Jersey State Police, in July and agreed to pay him a $100,000 salary. The City Council refused to confirm him as police director and members said the money could be better used to hire back patrol officers who were laid off earlier this year.

Miami Chief Offered 'Bribe' to Resign
A day after saying he was offered $400,000 to "leave quietly," Miami Police Chief Miguel Exposito now says city officials offered him a $200,000 to leave his post as top cop. Prior to a Jan. 13 commission meeting, Miami's Mayor Tomas Regalado, then City Manager Tony Crapp, and CFO Larry Spring met to discuss whether $200,000 would be enough incentive to persuade Chief Exposito to resign.

Chief Fires Washington Officer Cleared In Murder Trial
Everett (Wash.) Police Chief Jim Scharf has fired an officer who was cleared of murder after a jury trial, citing the officer's "unacceptable misconduct." Chief Scharf said Meade didn't consider other force options and didn't face an imminent threat.
