Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Mohamed Ahmed was shot in the face as he and his field training officer approached a well-known gang member in East Los Angeles on Wednesday, reports the Los Angeles Times.
Nestor Torres, a shot-caller with the Lott Stoners gang, shot Ahmed, 27, as the officer approached him. The training officer then returned fire, killing Torres.
Ahmed, a Somali immigrant, was seen as a future leader in the department who could build bridges to the Muslim community.
