3M, a global leader in respiratory protection, has announced its latest self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) solution to help law enforcement when operating in chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) and/or immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH) environments. The 3M Scott X3-21 Pro SCBA is certified to NFPA 1986, standard on respiratory protection equipment for tactical and technical operations.

Based on 3M Scott’s proven SCBA platform, the X3-21 Pro SCBA is tailored to meet the tactical and technical needs for law enforcement, urban search and rescue, HAZMAT response, and explosive ordnance disposal.

“The X3-21 Pro is a game-changer for law enforcement,” said Tony Pickett, 3M's global portfolio senior manager. “We took the proven capabilities of our fire SCBA and redesigned it to specifically meet the needs of law enforcement to help them perform at high levels in hazardous conditions when a reliable air source is needed.”

NFPA 1986 is a relatively new standard that specifies the minimum requirements for SCBA used in tactical and technical operations. It was specifically designed for emergency services personnel engaged in tactical operations, urban search and rescue, confined space rescue, HAZMAT response, clandestine drug lab operations, crime scene investigation, and other response and or recovery situations that may expose them to CBRN and/or IDLH hazards.

The X3-21 Pro is a simple-to-use SCBA designed with operational efficiencies and ease of training in mind. A MOLLE shoulder harness helps improve donning while minimizing pressure points and is removeable for cleaning to help with exposure reduction efforts. The lightweight and durable backframe is designed to place the bulk of the SCBA’s weight on the hips and features a non-reflective, tactical black design to help reduce operator signature. When paired with the 3M Scott AV-3000 HT Facepiece, which is also NIOSH certified as an air-purifying respirator (APR) with a broad range of filters, cartridges, and canisters, the new X3-21 Pro sets the standard for SCBA in law enforcement, 3M says.

“The X3-21 Pro SCBA has the durability, reliability and technical capabilities responders need to succeed in their mission,” said Jason Cannon, activation marketer for 3M Scott. “Its redundant safety features help provide confidence that it will perform in demanding environments.”
