VIDEO: Illinois Officer Seriously Wounded in Sunday Shooting

Late Sunday evening, an officer in Carbondale, IL, was shot as police were in pursuit of a suspect.

According to the Carbondale Police Department, officers on patrol in the area heard gunshots.

As the officers were headed to the scene, they found a tan, four-door Pontiac Grand Prix, driving away from the area at a high rate of speed.

The officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the drivers would not come to a halt, resulting in a police chase.

That chase ended and at least one person inside the vehicle started firing at the officers.

The officer that was shot was immediately taken to Memorial Hospital where he was treated for a gunshot wound.

KFVS TV reports he was alone in his patrol car when he was hit. Chief Jeff Grubbs would not comment on where the officer was hit or how many times.

He was later taken to a hospital in St. Louis for additional treatment. He remains in serious, but stable condition.
