California's 'Realignment' Toward Higher Crime
To soften the blow to local law enforcement and communities, California politicians are calling one of the largest criminal-justice shifts in state history a "realignment." Sadly, it appears the state's politicians are realigning California toward higher crime, potentially reversing years of declining violent crime.

Video: Handcuffing with Hands On the Head
Handcuffing a suspect after asking him to place his hands on top of his head may look good on cop shows, but it puts you at greater risk. It may be effective to cover a suspect, but police combat trainer Lt. Kevin Dillon says it should be avoided for pat-downs and handcuffing.

Video: How to Handcuff on a Wall
Many law enforcement agencies have scrapped on-the-wall handcuffing from police-academy training. However, as with many police tactics, your ability to win comes down to your execution of a proven method. Lt. Kevin Dillon provides you that method in a tactics video, demonstrating two effective handcuffing strategies — one in space, and a second on the wall.

Tactical Leadership
Leaders develop strong personality traits and inspire others to follow them. They rely on the principle of influence, and often create a "want to" environment rather than a "have to" environment for officers working under them.

Video: National Police Week's Officers of the Month
National Police Week also reminds us of the close calls of officers whose actions put them on the winning side, such as the NLEOMF's officers of the month, which are honored at a luncheon. California Sheriff's 'Haunted Jail' Draws More Than 4,000
Sheriff's explorers and volunteers tapped their creative juices, decorating the holding cells with macabre scenes. The event drew 1,000 in its first year, and was an even bigger success this year, as many of the 4,300 visitors waited an hour to enter the haunted house event.

Police Unity Tour's Wheels Spin for Fallen Officers
Lakewood (Wash.) Police Sgt. Mark Eakes carried more than just a memory of fellow Sgt. Mark Renninger as he peddled the 320 miles of the Police Unity Ride from New Jersey to D.C. during National Police Week.

Real "Christian" Warriors
Federal indictments detail a plan so heinous it deserves repeating because you need to be on guard for this kind of stuff. They were reportedly going to lure a local cop into an ambush and kill that officer. Then they were going to wait until other officers gathered from miles around for their victim's funeral and set off IEDs to bomb the procession. Their goal was to start a war between themselves and the U.S. government.

Memorable Cop Movies
Unfortunately, 2009 wasn't a particularly high-water mark for movies in my book, which makes it all the more tempting to reflect on another staple: the cop movie.
