A Hollywood, FL, police officer was shot and killed Sunday night as he tried to apprehend an armed-burglary suspect in a residential area near the community’s centerpiece, the Club at Emerald Hills golf course.

Officer Yandy Chirino, 28 years old and with the department only four years, was highly decorated, having earned several commendations and being named the department’s officer of the month in June 2020, the Miami Herald reports.

Chirino was reportedly responding to a burglary when he was confronted by 18-year-old Jason Banegas. It wasn’t clear if Chirino fired his weapon. It also wasn’t immediately clear if the shooting took place outside, or in a home or a building.

Nearby officers quickly apprehended Banegas, Hollywood Police Chief Chris O’Brien said. Banegas is expected to be charged with first-degree murder, armed burglary, battery on a law enforcement officer, carrying a concealed firearm, and resisting arrest with violence.
