A Memphis police officer is in critical condition after being dragged by a vehicle Wednesday afternoon while attempting to serve a subpoena, WMCA reports.

Upon arriving at the individual's home at around 1:25 p.m., officers saw the individual that was to be served standing in the yard. The individual walked past the officers and got into the driver’s side of a car. A person was in the passenger seat of the car with the door open, police said.

As an officer attempted to hand the subpoena to the individual through the passenger side, the driver backed up the vehicle and struck the officer with the open passenger door. The driver continued to back up, dragging the officer and striking a patrol unit, police said.
