An officer with the Phoenix Police Department says that the protective plate given to her by her father—a reserve officer himself—likely saved her life during an incident that left Commander Greg Carnicle dead during a domestic violence call in late March.

According to FOX 10 Phoenix, Officer Alicia Hubert was shot in the foot and back during the incident.

She said that she was given the additional body armor just days prior, which stopped the bullet from penetrating through her vest.

Officer Hubert—along with Officer Marissa Dowhan—are now out of the hospital and recovering.

Commander Greg Carnicle was honored during a funeral mass at Saint Jerome Catholic Church in Phoenix. Carnicle was a 31-year veteran of the police department and was scheduled to retire in two months. He is survived by his wife and four children.
