The Minneapolis Police Department has told its officers that they may no longer wear their uniform while attending political events when off duty.

According to NBC News, Chief Medaria Arradondo said he wants to ensure that the community knows the police department is not "showing favor or bias toward a particular political party or a candidate."

The policy change comes just over a week before an anticipated campaign rally for President Donald Trump.

Arradondo said the police department's policy change is not connected to Trump's visit and had been in the works for over a year.
