U.S. District Judge David Norton will announce the amount of time Slager will serve within the range of 19 to 24 years later today. The former officer could have faced life in prison.

Former South Carolina police officer Michael Slager faces 19 to 24 years in prison for the deadly shooting of Walter Scott, according to sentencing guidelines announced by a judge this morning.

U.S. District Judge David Norton will announce the amount of time Slager will serve within that range later today. The former officer could have faced life in prison.

Norton ruled that Slager committed second-degree murder and obstruction of justice, ABC News reports.

The judge's decision comes after Slager pleaded guilty to a federal civil rights offense for the April 4, 2015, North Charleston shooting.
