California's Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed a bill reducing the penalty for possessing an ounce or less of marijuana from a misdemeanor to an infraction.

California's Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed a bill reducing the penalty for possessing an ounce or less of marijuana from a misdemeanor to an infraction, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The law is expected to keep marijuana cases from going to trial and the penality would remain a fine of up to $100 and no jail time.

Schwarzenneger opposes Proposition 19, the state's Nov. 2 ballot initiative that would legalize the recreational use of marijuana.
