Compton Leaders Hope To Reestablish Police Department

Compton council members voted Tuesday to sever ties with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department that has overseen a precipitous drop in the murder rate.

Compton was once considered one of the most violent cities in America primarily due to the crack cocaine epidemic of the 1980s. There were 55 murders in 1999 compared with 37 in 2009. In 2008, Compton ranked as the 17th most dangerous city in America.
