Nearly one in five New York police officers working undercover said they have been involved in armed confrontations with uniformed officers in which they were mistaken for suspects, the New York Times reports.
An overwhelming majority of those officers said they used a fundamental training lesson: do not move a muscle.
In more than 80 percent of the 33 gunpoint confrontations, the undercover officer's ecision to remain motionless was the key to defusing the situation.
