The Salem (Ore.) Police Department placed a recruit on administrative leave two weeks after he began patrol duties, after he shot a fleeing suspect in the leg, OregonLive.com reports.

The incident began at 2:45 am today when Officer Vince Dawson and his field training officer, Corporal Justin Carney, stopped a vehicle involved in an open robbery investigation. All but one of the car's occupants fled, prompting the officers to pursue them separately on foot.

During the foot chase, Dawson shot Joshua Bruce, 22, in the leg. Bruce was later arrested on an outstanding parole violation warrant.

Officer Dawson, 36, is a 15-year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He and his field training officer, who was promoted to the rank of corporal in September, were both placed on administrative leave.
