A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer who was working off-duty as security at a local drugstore was seriously injured Tuesday morning when he was dragged by the car of a robbery suspect.

Officer Hakeem Peterson, who has served on the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department since 2005, suffered a fractured skull and a concussion. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Peterson was working off-duty in uniform at a Walgreen's drug store early Tuesday morning when a man came in and stole a large quantity of cologne, according to police. The man ran from the store and Peterson chased him. Peterson reached in to grab the man through the open passenger window of a car. The car, driven by a second suspect, drove off, dragging Peterson.

The car was described as a dark four-door sedan, probably a Ford Taurus, a Hyundai, or a Nissan. The robbery suspect was described as a young black male between 5 feet, 9 inches and 5 feet, 10 inches with a dark complexion. No description is available of the driver.
