Abalone LLC Face2Face

A while back, Sheriff Tom Almann of Mendocino County, Calif., was looking for a tool that could convince local high school kids to stay away from methamphetamine. He'd seen many a young, beautiful face ravaged by the drug, and he decided that the way to convince teens that meth is bad news was to appeal to their vanity. So he contacted software developer Laslo Vespremi, CEO of Abalone LLC, and asked him to create a product that would show teens how meth use would affect their appearance. The result is Face2Face, a software program that can show anyone how six months, one year, or two years of meth use will make them look. The result is, of course, not pretty. And that's the idea. The system is fully portable and easy to use, and according to Allmann and other users, it's very effective. Face2Face sells for $3,795 and includes two 12-megapixel cameras, software, mounting hardware, and a remote control.

Carlson Software Crime Scene Investigations

There are two components to Carlson Software's Crime Scene Investigations (CSI) software: CSI Mobile and CSI Office. Investigators can measure a crime or accident scene in the field using CSI Mobile and then take the information back to their offices and analyze and map it with CSI Office. CSI Mobile is easy-to-use and includes a lot of data useful for accident reconstruction and crime scene analysis, including a library of vehicle dimensions and common features of crime and accident scenes such as manholes, poles, hydrants, and trees.

CSI Office 2010 is now built on IntelliCAD 6.6, and it offers a 3D flyover feature that allows users to view a scene in three dimensions from many angles. Reports can be exported directly as PDF files. The Cincinnati Police Department participated in the development of the software.

CADZone The Crash-Crime Zone

Version 8 of CADZone's The Crash Zone-The Crime Zone includes a lot of new features that customers have been requesting. New crime scene features include a 3D body poser that allows investigators to accurately depict the position and disposition of a body. You can also now produce 3D stairs and ramps, giving much more depth to crime scene images. On The Crash Zone side, version 8 includes new skid analysis and momentum calculation tools as well as a database of common vehicles. The software also now lets users produce much more realistic 3D images with smooth shading features.

Knowledge Computing Corp. Coplink Solution Suite

Knowledge Computing Corp. (KCC), maker of Coplink, acquired i2, maker of Analyst's Notebook, in July. The result is a very powerful combination of Coplink's criminal identity database software with i2's proven crime analysis and investigative tools. Using Coplink, officers can tear through the veil of aliases used by criminals and even find their associates. Now the results can be seamlessly plugged into i2's Analyst's Notebook to close cases.

The new Coplink has so many features that we can only scratch the surface in this roundup, but some of the most exciting include: facial recognition, real-time crime monitoring, automated notification, suspicious activity monitoring, and compstat analysis. There's even a mobile version for agencies that use handheld computer systems and smart phones.

Presynct Technologies Presnyct Report Network

Unlike most incident reporting software Presynct is forms based at the data entry level and can integrate with proprietary records management systems. When Presynct is implemented, the user's computer display looks like the hard copy reports form that the department uses. This makes it easier for users to learn the new process, and it makes it more likely that they will accept it without a lot of grumbling. For supervisors all the way up to the chief, Presynct reports have an approval-rejection process.

PDSI TeleStaff

As the name implies, TeleStaff is a scheduling and notification solution for law enforcement and corrections agencies. The software automates paper staffing sheets and automates phone calls and other notifications to officers scheduled to work. Your agency's staffing policy is programmed into the system so that it can determine your staffing needs for any given shift. When staffing levels fall below requirements, an alarm is triggered and off-duty personnel are contacted by the system. Employees can view their schedules via a secured Internet connection. Some agencies have realized substantial savings in labor costs using TeleStaff.

Spillman Technologies Mobile 4.5

With version 4.5 of its Mobile solution, Spillman has incorporated customizable forms and drop-down menus, among other enhancements, to allow personnel to work more efficiently in the field. Automated Field Reporting modules make it easy for officers to complete citations, document accidents, and conduct interviews, and then send the data electronically from their vehicle laptops to agency headquarters.

Agencies can gather a range of data using Spillman's Driver License Scanning module that reads bar codes or magnetic stripes, then use the data to populate records or forms. Agencies can now also keep data private, restricting both image display and sensitive call data via dispatch.

SunGard/OSSI Crime Lab Module

The first thing you need to know about SunGard/OSSI Crime Lab Module is that you must have SunGard/OSSI's Property and Evidence Module to use it. The Crime Lab Module works with the Property and Evidence Module to allow investigators to submit and track online crime lab requests, eliminating the hassle and confusion of verbal and written requests. Investigators launch Crime Lab from the Investigator's Dashboard, which gives them access to all open cases. Lab requests can be created with a single click of a button. Requests can be prioritized by the investigator. An optional feature allows the crime lab technicians to notify the investigator that his or her request has been processed.

TriTech Software Systems VisiNet FBR

Field reports generate a lot of paper and many of them are filed and forgotten, even though they may provide key information about open cases. That's why a lot of agencies are using automated field-based reporting systems. TriTech's VisiNet FBR software is a Web-based application that allows agencies to create digital versions of any forms or documents, including crash/accident reports, traffic citations, field interviews, and arrest reports.

Once a form is completed, it can be automatically transmitted to a supervisor for review and filed in the agency's database. The report can later be retrieved by the supervisor using any of its fields-such as name, date, location-as search terms. In addition to its report management capabilities, VisiNet FBR also features geospatial analysis so that supervisors can monitor trends. Reports and analysis can be distributed online to the public, attorneys, and insurance adjusters.
