Chief William Balling said the suspect came out of the wooded area at a different location and fired at Sgt. Tim Kennedy, hitting him twice, once in the abdomen and once in the lower leg.
Officer Thadeu Holloway was loaded into another officer’s cruiser and taken to Miami Valley Hospital, where he was in stable condition Wednesday afternoon.
“This is not about one particular officer, policy or incident," Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther said in a statement. “Rather, this is about reforming the entire institution of policing in Columbus.”
Mizen was wounded in the finger while Mott was struck on the forehead. Both officers were taken to Mercy Hospital where they were treated for their injuries and then released.
Officer Scott Dawley was one of several officers responding around 2:30 p.m. to a report of shots fired on the east side of Nelsonville when the crash occurred.
The agency did not disclose the trooper's cause of death.
Shortly after the two officers arrive on Lawrence Avenue, gunfire erupts. They hop out of their vehicle and race towards the direction of the gunshots as people are running away. The officers are heard telling people to get down and to take cover behind vehicles.
Off-duty Columbus Officer Brian Wilson heard Giedeman's screams. He and his wife, Holly, ran toward the cries for help. They discovered Carmella and Giedeman on the deck.
Police were searching the area when a call came in around 8:12 a.m. about a possible body floating in the pond.
