Varrio Hawaiian Gardens was a SureƱo gang fiercely loyal to the Mexican Mafia, and the Mafia was in a racial war against Blacks. Varrio Hawaiian Gardens (HG) was also known as the "Hate Gang" because of the hate crimes it had committed against African Americans.

Keep Your Eye on Pseudo SureƱos
Just because a gang may seem unsophisticated and maybe it's just a pseudo-SureƱo gang, don't ignore their potential for violence. They may start slow on the gang learning curve but some of them will get tough just trying to survive. Jail and prison will further harden and train them.

Understanding Inmate Codes of Conduct
I've always marveled at this irony. Young men who rebel against authority and parental control, who commonly hate school, hate memorizing verses and symbols, hate reading history, hate learning new languages, and hate participating in physical education, enjoy doing all these things for their prison gang leaders.

To that cowardly pack of gang thugs, it was the symbol for the rival NorteƱo gangs and the Nuestra Familia prison gang. To them, this is like wearing a Nazi uniform to the Auschwitz survivors' reunion.

Gang Unit Confiscates Weapons
After noticing an upswing in gang activity in 2006, the Livermore (Calif.) Police Department's gang unit began more targeted efforts to keep the city's illegal gang activities under control. In this clip produced by the Contra Costa Times, officers confiscate a baseball bat painted with "XIII" for 13, which refers to the letter 'M' (13th in the alphabet) to pledge allegience to the Mexican Mafia.
