Oregon Heroin Traffickers Sentenced to Federal Prison
Two cousins from Medford, Ore., were sentenced to federal prison on Monday for leading a heroin trafficking organization in the Rogue Valley. Heroin-related arrests and overdoses in the Medford community have steadily increased since the organization established itself.

Arizona Man Gets 115 Years for Shooting Female Cop
On Tuesday Aaron Baka Lopez, 37, was sentenced to 115 years in prison for shooting and wounding Officer Jennifer Moore of the Phoenix Police Department in 2008.

Supreme Court Makes Mumia Abu-Jamal Death Sentence Possible
The Supreme Court threw out a 2008 ruling by an appeals court in Philadelphia that had set aside the death sentence of convicted cop killer Mumia Abu-Jamal. The justices ordered the appeals court to revisit the ruling, which had said Abu-Jamal deserved a new hearing.

S.C. Legislation Would Set Minimum Time for Home Invasion
Anyone convicted in South Carolina of breaking into someone's home with a weapon and seriously injuring or killing those inside would be sent to prison for at least 25 years under a bill up for debate.

New Mexico Abolishes Death Penalty
Gov. Bill Richardson went to Mass on Wednesday morning, then went to inspect the state penitentiary's high-security area and execution chamber. Then, shortly after 6 p.m., the governor signed legislation to repeal New Mexico's death penalty. He called it the toughest decision he had ever made.

Soros-Backed California Ballot Proposition Would Overhaul Sentencing of Drug Offenders
The Nonviolent Offender Rehabilitation Act, funded in part by billionaire George Soros, would be "the most ambitious sentencing and prison reform in U.S. history," according to the Drug Policy Alliance Network, a primary sponsor.
