We talked to the officers in question after each event, telling them they needed to slow down enough to be able to make correct decisions and to get good solid hits high center mass on the targets. One of the officers later asked me how they are supposed to balance slowing down with wanting to shoot quickly enough to not get shot during a real incident.

FN Herstal FNP-45 Duty Pistol
For a couple of years now, Belgium's FN Herstal has been working to secure a significant slice of the American market for law enforcement duty pistols. The Belgian company, which makes the legendary Browning Hi-Power pistol, launched its first polymer police handgun, the FNP-9 (9mm), back in 2006. The FNP is now available in 9mm, .40 S&W, .357 SIG, and .45 ACP.

Firing Practice Helps Make Survival Possible
Personal investigation indicates that only about 25 percent of officers practice on their own time. Supervisors, concerned by a low hit rate in critical incidents, may push for better handguns and advanced training. But officers are responsible for their own safety and should practice on their own.
