The Texas Department of Public Safety said a Highway Patrol trooper died in a single-car accident in Northeast Texas late Saturday night.

DPS said Trooper Jeffrey Nichols, 27, was driving on FM 38 in Lamar County when he apparently lost control of his patrol car and crashed into a tree near the community of Tigertown, about 90 miles northeast of Dallas.

The cause of the crash is being investigated. Nichols had been with DPS since 2011 and was stationed in Paris. The department said he is the department's 218th officer to die in the line of duty since 1837, WFAA TV reports.
