Following the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO in 2014, police officers in many places in America began to pull back from proactive policing due to fear that they might face criminal charges, civil lawsuits, or simply a trial by social media. This withdrawal from actively looking for criminal activity and stopping it from happening has arguably led to an increase in criminal activity in some places.
