Four gang members who were charged with the murder of a reserve Virginia police officer, Kevin Quick, will not be facing the death penalty, federal prosecutors told reporters Friday.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has taken the death penalty off the table, but the co-defendants will face the possibility of life in prison for their alleged role in killing Quick, 45, CBS News reports. He was reported missing on Feb. 1 and his body was found several days later.

The suspects -- Daniel Lamont Mathis, Shantai Monique Shelton, Mersadies Lachalle Shelton and Travis Leon Bell, also known as Kweli Uhuru -- were charged in May.

Two other men, Darnell Stokes, Jr. and Halisi Uhuru, were also charged with second-degree capital murder during abduction, WTVR reported in February. According to the station, both have criminal records. Stokes spent 12 years in prison and was released in Oct. 2012 and Uhuru, who was arrested in 2005, was released in Dec. 2013.

Quick was a reserve captain with the Waynesboro (Va.) Police Department.

Why not the death penalty? Because he was a RESERVE OFFICER (read that "part-time" officer?) In the eyes of these thugs, he was a COP. The part-time/full-time distinction is purely fiduciary. Any other officer could have been the target. Very sad.

Richard Koleff @ 11/17/2014 3:52 PM

Do you think Mr Obama, Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson will show up for this? Of course not, it's just a bunch of black no goods killing a white cop!

P.T. @ 11/17/2014 3:57 PM

Holder made the decision.....we all know what he thinks of white police officers. Had the officer been black the perps would all face the death penalty.

We all know what Holder thinks of white officers. If the cop had been black all the perps would be facing the death penalty.

UFB..... He probably made that decision thinking, that six less Democrat votes we would never get back. Sorry to the family of Officer Quick. Holder has now made your family victims again.

Desert Fuzz @ 11/17/2014 8:05 PM

Why is this even being tried federally? Charge them under state law and get the death penalty that way. It's nearly impossible to get the needle in federal court.

Robert Domin @ 11/17/2014 8:22 PM

This is Holders way of getting back at cops for his being pulled over for speeding 30 years ago.

When is our court system going to wake up and smell the roses. We need to send a message to the gangs in this country. Kill an officer and you will receive the death penalty. It's time to grow some.

plato's playdough @ 11/18/2014 3:50 AM

You should listen to that new vid. All four charged, All Four "belong to the Bloods gang set 99 Goon Syndikate." They kidnapped Quick in his car, then killed him.

At the end, the reporter says "They should all get the death penalty, otherwise it just shows others they can kill and get away with it."

Take a look at this site...

Now listen to this vid about Mumia, you remember him?

When you hear the vid, I believe you may begin to grasp what Holder's motivations may be.

plato's playdough @ 11/18/2014 4:02 AM

You should really take a look at it. If you don't know about this particular movement, you should become aware, it involves the Ferguson Mo issue as well.

RetiredChief @ 11/18/2014 6:24 AM

Why is this being handled by the feds? Why are these Crips not being prosecuted locally where the racist Holder would have nothing to say about it?

HRPufnstuf @ 11/18/2014 12:19 PM

Isn't this a "Hate Crime?" Isn't this racial profiling? Isn't this a civil rights violation? Why isn't Holder "investigating" all of those things? Where is Jesse Jackson? Al Sharpton? Oh, the injustice of it all! We DEMAND Justice!

Oh, my bad. They were black, the cop was white. Sorry. It only works the other way.

Clark @ 11/18/2014 4:49 PM

Eric Holder, like his boss, are against law enforcement in favor of "righting wrongs". What a ridiculous, unfunny clown.

Ima Leprechaun @ 11/19/2014 12:29 AM

Life in prison can easily be reduced or vacated by a Governor and the criminals are freed. It's harder to re-offend after they are put to death.

scott @ 11/24/2014 6:03 PM

only death penalty for gangs will keep jurors and there familys safe from rhe criminal ordering a hit on your family , give them 1 year for appeals that's all then execute them .

scott @ 11/24/2014 6:08 PM
