New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg criticized Virginia for repealing a law limiting purchases of handguns to one per month, and said the move would enhance the state's reputation as the gun-running capitol of the East Coast, reports the New York Daily News.

"Virginia is the No. 1 out-of-state source of crime guns in New York, and one of the top suppliers of crime guns nationally," Bloomberg said.

Two NYPD cops have been shot with illegal guns from Virginia in the past two months. Officer Peter Figoski was killed Dec. 12 when he interrupted a Brooklyn drug robbery. Officer Thomas Richards survived a lower East Side shooting on Monday when a suspect's bullet hit his spare ammunition magazine.
