NYC Mayor Rips Virginia's Repeal of Gun Law

March 01, 2012  |

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg criticized Virginia for repealing a law limiting purchases of handguns to one per month, and said the move would enhance the state's reputation as the gun-running capitol of the East Coast, reports the New York Daily News.

"Virginia is the No. 1 out-of-state source of crime guns in New York, and one of the top suppliers of crime guns nationally," Bloomberg said.

Two NYPD cops have been shot with illegal guns from Virginia in the past two months. Officer Peter Figoski was killed Dec. 12 when he interrupted a Brooklyn drug robbery. Officer Thomas Richards survived a lower East Side shooting on Monday when a suspect's bullet hit his spare ammunition magazine.

I thought that title went to WEST Virginia? Mayor Bloomberg is the modern day Don Quixote; he's spending all his money fighting something that is guaranteed by our Constitution...And I really don't think that Virginians give a rat's a$$ about his criticism.

Hey, I'm a little upset here. I thought Arizona was the reason NYC is such a rats nest for guns. After all, Bloomberg did try his undercover gun buys here first because his city is so crime free. Boy, sneaky way to go Virginia!! Good thing you can't buy a gun on the streets of NYC. What an airbag.

China Spring @ 3/1/2012 7:43 PM

Mayor Bloomberg is a strange man. I cannot understand him so I don't even try. In Texas, he is almost a laughingstock. <><

Trigger @ 3/2/2012 5:07 AM

Let's see "illegal guns from Virginia" used in NY. But wait Virginia is talking about "legal" sales of guns. So where to bad people get illegal guns from, well they either steal legal guns and use them illegally or the contact other bad people who sell illegal guns. Mayor Bloomberg stop worrying about re-election and start understanding the "real" life of the street. I would definitely like to have one honest law abiding citizen possess a thousand legal guns than one asshole possess one illegal gun, but I guess I am not Mayor Bloomberg.

Stan Martin @ 3/2/2012 5:58 AM

WV Sheepdog is correct, Virginians don't give a rat's a$$ about Major Bloomberg. In fact Virginia passed laws to stop NYC police from conducting gun "staw" purchases sting operations in VA.

Trigger is correct Bloomberg and all like him need to mind their own busy.

Patriot73 @ 3/2/2012 6:36 AM

Virginia residents have legally been allowed to purchase more than 1 gun a month for some time now if you have a concealed weapons permit, or a LEO. It's not like this is new news. I know plenty of people, including myslef ( I am a Va. resident ) who have purchased more than one handgun in a month. It is now just legal for any law abiding residents who chooses not to have a concealed carry permit to purchase more than one gun a month.

We all have to meet the same standard, concealed carry permit or not, to be able to purchase the gun anyway. None of the requirements have changed, so I don't see what Bloomberg is crying about, just another reason to jump up on his soapbox and make fool of himself.

Rob in FL @ 3/2/2012 7:54 AM

Who cares what Bloomberg says? The fact that this is considered a "top story" suggests it's a very slow week for news...

CT Carlson @ 3/2/2012 9:02 AM

Even at 1 gun per month, your hands are full after 31 days... This kind of gun control is just ridiculous. It is nice to see dumb laws removed rather than languishing on the books for years.

Scott from Florida @ 3/2/2012 10:56 AM

I would like to see the ratio of violent crime between Virginia and NYC. Bloomberg is a potato. Chins Spring, in Florida, he is a laughing stock. I find it ironic a man would work so hard to prevent law abiding citizens the right to self defense when he wont go anywhere without armed guards. It appears NYC is trying to dictate what Virginia does. I have a better idea, Virginians should demand NYC gets a political enema.

Moron Bloomburg needs to MIND HIS OWN AFFAIRS and not the affairs of others. And if he'd get rid of the worthless laws he has on firearms, maybe the people of NYC could use thier parks after dark.

Lew from PA @ 3/5/2012 4:18 AM

having lived outside on NYC for 25 years and had a CCL for about 20 years. most people don't realise that NYC does not abide by state law for CCLs or any other firearm they (through the state legislature) set their own rules and fees. They may have to be approved by the state but I doubt it. additionally there are special rules if you have a stated issued license for traveling into the city, many find this out when going to the two major airports. All long guns must be registered in the city as well and they limit the number you can have.

Doubting Thomas @ 3/5/2012 9:52 AM

Bloomberg is an idiot. VA and NYC have approximately the same population (8M per 2010 census) yet NYC has more murders than Virginia. NYC is 6.4 and Virginia is 4.6 per 100K inhabitants (UCR data). However when you consider the size of the NYPD, its obvious that NYC gun control laws are meaningless and completely ineffective. Regardless we don't need anything from NYC in VA to include Bloomberg's meddling. Hopefully this means he will stay away from VA until he has to pander to our congressional delegations for more homeland security money to defend his city.

Jim @ 3/17/2012 5:49 PM

First and foremost this is NONE of the Mayor of NYC business! What he needs to do is get the citizens of NYC who are decent hardworking and law-abiding people the ability to obtain and carry firearms acknowledging their rights under the 2nd Amendment. At least that way they will be able to defend themselves against the bad guys.

Tri R. @ 4/4/2012 11:30 PM

Woah! Last year it was Maryland, where you can only purchase one regulated gun a month, have to wait 8 days for a background check AND sign away your rights to the Maryland State Police to , at their option, look into your medical records for any reason not to approve the application by looking for a scintilla of evidence of Mental health issues. Next the good mayor of NYC will be blaming the Great State of Texas for his inability to police NYC.
