VIDEO: Ohio Officer Threatens CCW Holder

The Canton (Ohio) Police Officer who was fired for berating a concealed-carry permit holder during a traffic stop filed an appeal to regain his position, reports the Canton Repository.

Patrolman Daniel Harless was fired in January for verbally abusing a CCW holder during a June 8, 2011 traffic stop. During a 17-minute clip catured by his cruiser's dash cam, Harless threatens to "blast you in the mouth" as he and another officer detain the man and search the vehicle.

The attorney representing Harless and the city have agreed to have the case heard by a third-party arbitrator.

Nope. Immature babies do not need to own guns. I say his career is over carrying firearms!!

PBJ @ 4/9/2012 6:20 PM

Think he'll get a CCW permit now? Ha!

gp cobb @ 4/9/2012 7:09 PM

Ditto: Nurse, spot on.

Joel @ 4/9/2012 7:13 PM

That was pretty bad.... and stupid.

Alexander @ 4/9/2012 8:22 PM

Wow! At first I was thinking what were these people doing parked? The next thing I see is that the officers attention go onto the passengers. What troubles me the most is that one officer gets into the rear of the car and starts a search without securing the driver. Then everything goes bad from there. Listen to this video and you decide. I think the officers got a good case of PTSD and other issues and needs to be taken off of the streets. If ever getting pulled over always! always! inform the officer that's pulling you over that you have a weapon on your person and you carry a valid CCW Permit. This is standard procedure but, there's are always one bad cop that's out there to bust stones.... Shame on the officers in this video...

Harless belongs in an institution and heavily medicated until independent doctors see that he passes a full-up psych exam. Who's his next uncontrolled rage target? His wife or kids if he has them? Someone who bumps him in a grocery line? The mom with kids who gets in his way on the road? Think what the Canton PD's liability will be when, not if, that happens. PTSD? I don't think so. It's outrageous that an out-of-control LEO can use PTSD as an excuse to avoid proper punishment for gross misconduct. It just demeans real combat veterans who actually suffer from the disorder.

And where were Harless' brother and sister officers during his tirades? Why didn't they go to their superiors or dept psychs to express their concern? As the hearing officer pointed out, this isn't a one-time incident but a pattern of behavior over years.

As to informing the officer, the driver did in this case when he could get a word in edgewise. The driver should have been more assertive in doing so, but who knows if that would have pushed Harless over the edge. In OH, TX, and a few other places, informing is required by law. In most of the country, it's not required and frankly, it's nobody's business who's carrying or not when it is not the issue at hand. That's consistent with the 2nd and 4th Amendments.

The bottom line is that a smart LEO is always courteous, professional, and prepared, period. If one is courteous, professional, and prepared, then it doesn't matter if they are on video or not.

Embarassing, disgusting and shameful out of control behavior. WE do not behave like this scary blemish! If anything can be learned from this is how not to do what he did. Ohio PD please rid yourselves of this liability. You nailed it Bob.....who else is he tormenting? Totally unprofessional! We are PROFESSIONALS!

Bill @ 4/10/2012 6:38 AM

This guy is a moron.... he has that shirt with the big red S on the front on under his uniform... we need to make sure he NEVER works in law enforcement again.... he needs to be on a shovel in a ditch somewhere venting all his anger.... probably talks to his wife and kids the same way.... I hope he stops me one day...

jj2000 @ 4/10/2012 7:31 AM

Ha! Ha! You have no job because you have a god complex.

I bet You wish you could take that back but you cant. Ha!Ha!

KF @ 4/10/2012 2:36 PM

Appealing being fired? He's lucky he's not in prison.

John @ 4/10/2012 3:38 PM

I agree with KF. Mr. Harless should have been charged with a crime. Maybe that would lessen his chance of winning the appeal to his employment discharge.

Rob @ 4/11/2012 8:54 PM

Why was he not charged and put in jail?
