Memos Indicate Eric Holder Lied About Botched Gun Operation

House Republicans are pressing the White House to appoint a special counsel to determine whether Attorney General Eric Holder lied about his knowledge of the Fast and Furious gun operation, reports Fox News.

CBS News has obtained several memos and an e-mail showing that Holder had knowledge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives' "Operation Fast and Furious" as early as July 5, 2010, which would directly contradict his testimony to Congress on May 3, where he said, "I probably heard about Fast and Furious for the first time over the last few weeks."

A Justice Department spokeswoman reiterated Holder's stance to the Huffington Post, saying Holder "has consistently said he became aware of the questionable tactics in early 2011 when ATF agents first raised them publicly, and then promptly asked the IG to investigate the matter."

In 2009, ATF's Phoenix office began Fast and Furious, in which agents monitored but did not disrupt the sale of guns from American dealers to suspected "straw purchasers," who obtain guns for criminal organizations. About 2,000 to 2,500 weapons were sold in this way.

Holder should resign now or face going to federal prison if he wants to wait for all the evidence to come out. This is a direct reflection on the Obama administration which shows it to be a lying and/or incompetent one.

BlueSheepdog @ 10/4/2011 6:10 PM

Corruption at the highest levels. It is too late for resignation. The acts of Holder and those under (and above?) him have resulted in the deaths of two federal agents and more than 100 Mexican citizens. PEOPLE HAVE DIED because of this "operation."

Additionally, facilitating the shipment of arms to an insurrection in another country is an act of war. Why isn't this the lead story on every newspaper, newscast and webpage?

RetCop @ 10/4/2011 6:15 PM

What a betrayal to the American people, those in uniform and to Mexico itself.

You can't tell me that holder didn't know about Fast and Furious,no operation of this magnitude would or could take place without his authorization and knowledge, the same goes for napolitano and even obama. No field office agent could allow or would allow this to take place without authority from higher up.Holder and napolitano together are just peg boys for obama, without his okay,it doesn't happen, too many laws were broken and they're adding to it by lying to congress.,Send them to Gitmo for an arraignment and holding pending trial.

TripWire @ 10/5/2011 12:30 AM

It should be noted that most media, even this article, uses false assumptions in its reporting of this ongoing story. The vast majority of the weapons that are siezed from the Mexican drug cartels are fully automatic, Warsaw Pact weapons made in eastern Europe, not semi-automatic AR-15s bought by straw purchasers and smuggled into Mexico from the U.S. as the Obama Administration and the hardcore Left's anti-gun crowd would have us believe. The whole Fast and Furious operation was a political ploy to further Obamas thinly veiled assualt on the Constitutional rights of U.S. Citizens and has blown up in their faces. This goes all the way to the top, but even so, Holder needs to be held accountable. As a U.S. citizen, it is our responsibility to reject the koolaid that the media and the Presidents handlers are trying to feed you. It took me less than five minutes to find the above information. Question everything, because Obama(Mr.Transparency) lies as much or more than Bush did, and he seems to be actually more of a threat to our freedom than Bush was. Bush was a bumbling fool, but Obama and Co. are setting a new low standard for government beaurocracy gone mad. Whatever happened to Obamas promise to make his administration more transperent than previous administrations? Handling the media, in my opinion is not transperent in my book, and I am disheartened that Police Magazine went with this "version" of the truth.

mini28 @ 10/5/2011 5:36 AM

I think he lied. The whole administration in office lies. They all need to go. I can't wait for the 2012 elections. Toss 'em all out!

Politicians = Liars

J. Parker @ 10/5/2011 8:44 AM

The question is did someone in this administration get paid off by the drug lords to allow these guns to go to Mexico. I know that this administration really wanted to pass more stringent gun laws. Showing that guns were being sold illegally to drug cartel would give them the ability to focus their attempts to restrict the sale of all guns.

We must remember that the first battle of the revolutionary war took place at Lexington and Concord Mass. This was a fight over gun control. Governments that take citizens firearms, do so to control its citizens. THAT’S WHY IN WAS INCLUDED IN THE BILL OF RIGHTS IN THE U.S. CONSTITUTION. REMEMBER! THE BILL OF RIGHTS ARE RIGHTS OF CITIZENS THAT GOVERNMENT CANNOT TAKE AWAY FROM YOU! GUARD THEM OR YOU WILL LOSE THEM!!!!!

wasson6515 @ 10/5/2011 9:12 AM

The part I am having trouble wrapping my head around is the fact that for the longest time now the government and the media have been telling the world that it is all the gun dealers and unscrupulous gun dealers selling firearms to the drug cartels, using this excuse to try and limit gun ownership and even take firearms away when it was them the whole time manipulating the system. how come the non-biased news media has not turned this story into world wide news? didn't the president of mexico demand we take away our firearms, and isn't our leadership attempting to do just that when all along it was they and not us that were committing the violations?

Tom Ret @ 10/5/2011 10:57 AM

Times up for Holder to resign so now he should face charges. Hopefully,
Obama's knowledge of this fiasco will be exposed as well.

JJ @ 10/5/2011 11:00 AM

As a retired county prosecutor with 26 years of experience and 37 years as a reserve police officer, I am unable to wrap my mind around what the ATF was attempting to accomplish in Fast and Furious.

Since the Mexican authorities were unaware of this operation as were ATF and other Federal agents assigned to duties in Mexico, who was supposed to do the follow-up investigation once the guns crossed the Border?

Although the operation smacks of incompetence, I have found that most ATF agents are well trained investigatiors, although like all Federal agents, their supervisors must bend to whatever political wind happens to be blowing in from Washington DC. Considering that the US Attorney assigned to this case was the same one that refused to file on a grenade smuggler caught crossing the Border, I have to think that this was planned operation with some unstated objective.

Since the Obama administration responded to Fast and Furious by enacting more restrictive regulations for firearms sales in the Border States, it appears clear that Fast and Furious was designed to restict gun ownership in this country. In Fast and Furious, Obama has followed his advisers advice to take advantage of any crisis that arises to further his objectives - in this case, disarming the citizenry.

Fast and Furious is a sad comment on the Obama administration and its ability to follow the Constitution and the laws of the United States.

lilpuu @ 10/5/2011 11:09 AM

Yes, but I just heard that past President Bush did the same thing as reported on Fox News today. What a shame. So what do you do know>

JJ @ 10/5/2011 12:24 PM

To lilpuu,

I read the same article in today's paper but what was not mentioned was that any of the guns in that operation ever crossed the Mexican Border. Nor, apparently, was anyone shot with any those firearms. In Fast and Furious, the guns not only crossed the border in large quanties, those guns are responsible for some 600 Mexican deaths and the murder of 2 US Federal agents. Considering the left bias of our media, if they could have dumped this on Bush's doorstep, they would have.

Following contraband up the food chain is a common law enforcement tactic but the investigating officers should not let the contraband out of their sight. This can be done through surveillance or GPS tracking devices and when dealing with inherently deadly items such as explosives and weaponry, mistakes cannot be allowed. Fast and Furious allowed such mistakes to occur repeatedly. The FBI has been involved with several stings involving terrorists where the explosive materials or weaponry have been rendered inert or have been closely watched so there is a proper way to do such operations. That was not done in Fast and Furious and Obama is just going to have to accept the blame since it is clear that senior officials in his administration were fully aware of what was going on. As proof that this is Obams's mess, 3 senior ATF officials that were coordinating Fast and Furious were either transferred or promoted by Obama and were not relieved of duty. Were I the President and these supervisors were operating in an unauthorized manner with international ramifications, they would have been fired immediately and civil service could have sorted it out. Obama's actions speak louder than his denials.

c1ogden @ 10/5/2011 1:07 PM

One of NObama's co-conspirators is lying? That isn't even news anymore! It would, however, be major headline news if one of them ever told the truth!

slobull @ 10/5/2011 2:25 PM

Lets see, Holder over looks the US Marshall's office. Boy I'd like to see it when they arrest the boss for what ever his skinny butt is charged with.
But, he probably has doc's showing that the janitor signed the orders. Just think about all the lies old Sara Bradey's and like groups have come-up with, I still think that hand gun control bought that boat load of guns from that Chinese Gen. to stir shit up for their side.

Davesam25G @ 10/5/2011 11:29 PM

Tit for tat now bring up Operation Wide receiver out of Tucson...Mark Twain said it best you don't have to remember anything when you tell the truth....Is that not why oath's of office are taken guess I am too old the downside to us yet!

rottiedog @ 10/7/2011 10:23 PM

Is this really a serious question? Of course he lied, they all lied, they all lie all the time about everything. It's called being a politician. All poiliticians should be fired.

Ruth Marie @ 10/8/2011 11:39 PM

The Obama administration and Eric Holder himself are directly responsible for the death of Border Patrol Agent Terry.

When will anyone in the government have the balls to bring them both up on charges of treason? They are enemies of the state.

Leo Graywolf @ 10/11/2011 1:42 PM

Perjured yourself you lying SOB! You were there from the Git-Go. Can you say Aqua Purita? Diamond is not the DOJ's best friend.
