Colorado State Patrol
Colorado State Patrol officials say Cpl. Tye Simcox, a 16-year law enforcement veteran, was "targeted," CBS reports.
The shooting happened just after 1 p.m. in Westminster when the trooper was doing paperwork in the center median and a driver ambushed him and fired multiple shots out of an unknown vehicle.
The suspect pulled over, got out and continued firing at Simcox, police say. The wounded trooper got out of his car and returned fire with his department-issued rifle on the side of the highway.
The trooper, who was shot in the arm and applied a tourniquet for bleeding control, was taken to the hospital, and has since been released, CSP officials say.
