Legal teams representing the family of a special police officer shot and killed during a 2022 training announced they have filed a lawsuit against the District of Columbia alleging that gross negligence led to the death.
The defendants include the D.C. government, the contracted trainer, his company, and two other individuals, reports FOX5.
Maurica Alex Manyan was shot and killed by a retired D.C. lieutenant during training exercises at Anacostia Public Library last August.
She and a group of special police officer trainees had just ended baton training. The training was led by 59-year-old Jesse Porter, a former officer working as a private contractor.
Surveillance video from the library released in September shows the group gathered to take a photo and Porter suddenly moved from the side of the group, drew his weapon, and fired at Manyan. She was struck once in the chest.
In May, Porter was indicted on three counts of second-degree murder while armed, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, and unlawful discharge of a firearm. He later accepted a plea agreement for one count of involuntary manslaughter while armed and one count of unlawful discharge of a firearm.
