A Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy is in stable condition after undergoing surgery following an officer-involved shooting in Long Beach Monday.

The unidentified male deputy was shot at Long Beach Boulevard at 69th Street in north Long Beach, a quarter-mile north of Artesia Boulevard and just south of Compton shortly after 10 a.m., Sheriff's officials told CBS News Los Angeles.

The suspect, who was killed in the altercation, was reportedly on a bicycle and refused to pull over when the two deputies, on routine patrol, attempted to stop him.

"(The suspect) was armed with a semi-automatic weapon," L.A. County Sheriff's Dept. Spokesperson Nicole Nishida said. "There was a fight that ensued, and he attempted to grab one of the deputies' guns."
