A pharmacy technician showed up for work at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center on Thursday brandishing two handguns, killed his boss and another manager and then fatally shot himself, witnesses said. A rumor of impending layoffs apparently triggered the attack.

The police officer who shot a man suspected of killing seven patients and a nurse last weekend at a North Carolina nursing home said in a television interview that "it was very scary" to be walking the halls of the facility, looking for the gunman.
