On Friday May 13 more than 20,000 people, including officers, survivors of fallen officers, and police supporters gathered on the National Mall in Washington, DC, for the 28th annual Police Week Candlelight Vigil. Normally held in and around the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, this year’s vigil was held on the Mall in the shadow of the Washington Monument and with the Capitol Hill as a backdrop. Attendees said the location made the event even more emotional. POLICE Magazine sent photographer Lynn Cronquist to this year’s vigil. She captured images of survivors being escorted to their seats, dignitaries such as Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson and Attorney General Loretta Lynch speaking, the candlelight ceremony itself, and officers visiting the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial after the vigil to pay their respects to fallen comrades. The 2011 candlelight vigil during National Police Week in Washington, D.C., drew up to 20,000 officers, police survivors, dignitaries, and other law enforcement supporters to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial for the reading of 316 names added to the wall this year. The vigil is organized by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF).

To honor their sacrifice, the names of 316 law enforcement officers were engraved onto the marble walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. The men and women who served their communities as officers, deputies, troopers and agents were honored during National Police Week, and well-wishers came to pay homage to their memories by leaving notes, photos, duty gear and other personal items. More than 20,000 officers, police survivors, dignitaries, and invited guests participated in a candlelight vigil at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in D.C. This year, the vigil included the reading of 334 names of officers who have been added to the memorial walls, including 116 who ended watch in 2009.

The names of almost 19,000 law enforcement men and women have been added to the curving, 304-foot marble walls of the National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial. The officers and families who knew them arrived at the memorial during National Police Week to pay tribute by leaving roses, photos, wreaths, a SWAT helmet, a duty flashlight, and other personel items.

Each year, about 1,100 officers participate in the Police Unity Tour, a 320-mile bicycle ride from New Jersey to D.C. during National Police Week.
