Next-generation 911 (NG 911) is a term that refers to the transition in public safety to broadband technology and multimedia-enabled operations that will enhance 911 capabilities for call centers and first responders. NG 911 relies on the implementation of an Emergency Services IP Network (ESInet) that lets a person send video, voice and text "calls" to a call center during an emergency.

The devastating earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan, as well as the ongoing nuclear power plant malfunctions there, serves as a grim reminder that similar disasters can occur here in the U.S. We need to better equip police officers, firefighters and other public safety personnel, so they can respond immediately and cohesively to emergency situations.

SWAT competitions give the teams an opportunity to compete against other tactical teams in events designed to test their competency and mettle. Among the many excellent SWAT competitions to choose from, Urban Shield's "full-scale exercise" format is widely considered the most realistically challenging.

I refer to Urban Shield as a "gruelathon," and this year proved even tougher than 2009. Although there are a number of outstanding SWAT competitions throughout America, I can think of none more realistic, encompassing, massive and demanding than Urban Shield.

I know what it's like to have to get out and work a traffic accident; it only takes a few seconds to don this vest. There are still some officers who resist wearing the vest and try to trump up the circumstances to exempt themselves. You're only endangering yourself by doing this.
