The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has recently acquired ballistic helmets for its patrol personnel. While there are still a lot of stupid practices within my alma mater, LASD has a deserved reputation for emphasizing officer safety and equipping its personnel accordingly.

Once upon a time you had to use your radio to run subjects for wants and warrants. Now, you can run as many subjects as you want. As if that wasn't enough, license plate recognition systems can alert you for warrants.

I find it inconceivable that in 2008 there are so many police not wearing protective vests. Body armor needs to be considered as standard and essential as the gun, badge, and uniform.
