Even after lowering the hiring standards, many agencies can't fill their ranks. In some cities it's common for detectives and other plainclothes personnel to be sent out in uniform on patrol. In some jurisdictions it's not unusual for patrol units to field 50% of their allocated officers because they just don't have enough people to do the job.

It's no secret that groups like Antifa and Anonymous are simpatico, and when you add BLM activists to the mix, you have a troika of anti-police groups that is not to be underestimated. Consequently, officers must maintain vigilant watch for threats while off duty.

When the Founding Fathers drafted the Constitution, they didn't exclude law enforcement officers from the right to free speech. So we do not have to remain silent while the fringe voices a cacophony of anti-police rhetoric.

What really angers me, however, is the fact that the protesters are using the rally cry, "Black Lives Matter." While they are correct in what they say, wouldn't a better cry be "All Lives Matter?" And that includes the lives of law enforcement officers who have to make split-second decisions while under attack.

Those in our profession have always been in harm's way. But over the past several years and especially over the past few months, we have seen the effect that irresponsible rhetoric can have in exacerbating the current climate of mistrust and transforming it into violence targeting police officers. We have to say, with one voice, "Enough is enough!"

Al Sharpton, Bill Clinton, and other self-righteous police critics need to spend some quality time in force-on-force scenario training. I call that training the "funhouse." And I use the term ironically because it teaches you that being an officer in high stress situations is anything but fun.
