Several themes emerge as I look back on my own small piece of that history. They are things that I wish I understood better when I was younger on the job. They are also things that I hope those who come after me can find of some service as they continue the work that I am leaving behind.

You are a chief or sheriff. Get real and train with your officers. You should be one of the first enrolled in your defensive tactics and subject control training classes. Your attendance and participation will speak to all, and what it will say is this stuff is real and it's important.

Everyone has ideas on how to improve their workplace. Sometimes they're even good, workable ideas. You know how you would do things if you were the boss. Fortunately, you don't necessarily have to be the boss to bring your brainchild to reality. You just have to sell it effectively.

High-speed pursuits are the most dangerous of all police activities for innocent citizens, regardless of the circumstances! In my example it was a rural setting at 0300 hours on a straight road with no one else around, except for the other vehicle that became an unwitting rolling roadblock for my pursuit.
