Officers of the Los Angeles Police Department have been responding to the area's rash of wildfires this week, serving a wide variety of missions.
One of their missions has been to help animals trapped in the fire zones.
Officers from the LAPD's equestrian unit helped rescue horses trapped in the massive Creek Fire in Sylmar.
The Creek Fire started Tuesday morning and has destroyed at least 30 homes and burned nearly 11,500 acres.
Within the city limits LAPD officers responded to the Skirbal Fire, which erupted early Wednesday morning next to the 405 freeway near Mulholland Drive. The Skirball fire has burned nearly 500 acres and destroyed four homes in Bel-Air.
Neither fire is contained.

The LAPD Air Support Division is the largest municipal airborne law enforcement organization in the U.S. and operates from the LAPD Hooper Heliport. The helicopter crews assist with thousands of arrests, pursuits and crimes in progress each year. The LAPD's airborne law enforcement program began with one helicopter in 1956. Today, the Air Support Division is the largest municipal airborne law enforcement operation in the world and logged more than 18,000 flight hours in 2011. The Los Angeles Police Department is now field-testing the Vectrix VX-3, a unique three-wheeled electric patrol vehicle that will be available in the spring. The first female police officer in the country with arrest powers, Alice Stebbins Wells, arrived in 1910 with the Los Angeles Police Department. By 1937, the department employed 39 policewomen. Women are serving in most areas of the department; they have yet to crack the elite SWAT unit, but a 2008 report led to 12 women being accepted into the training program that feeds the unit. Ford's Crown Vic Police Interceptor (2009) is a workhorse patrol car for big-city and small-town LE agencies. The automaker has committed to producing it through 2011. Known as the CVPI, it has been a staple in the fleets of the Los Angeles Police Department and New York State Police, as well as the South Dakota Highway Patrol and Sandy Springs (Ga.) Police Department.
