Manufacturers are mindful of how hot summer months can get for officers in uniform. Some have altered existing products specifically for hot weather, while others have created brand new gear. The results are ultra-lightweight, sweat-wicking products, along with items designed to hydrate, that include cooling effects without sacrificing protection or professionalism.

Technology tends to be the emphasis of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) conference. True to form, many of the coolest products at this year's show, held Sep. 29–Oct. 3 in San Diego, focused on the now high-tech aspects of evidence collection. What should you consider when looking at outerwear for duty or most any foul weather? First, versatility. Because quality outerwear is expensive, it needs to serve for at least three seasons out of the year. The second item to consider is whether the outer jacket is truly waterproof or just water resistant; there is nothing worse than being cold and wet. Last is the price. If the clothing breaks the bank it will cause issues.
