What we don't need are firearms instructors—or any other instructors—that aren't interested in staying current, or don't want to be cross-trained in other high-risk disciplines. What we need are Force and Control Instructors.

Many departments have a couple—or a few—officers that struggle each time qualification comes around. It then falls to the firearms training staff to get them through it.

Most departments do not keep firearms qualification scores, opting instead for a pass/fail system. They reason that it's better if plaintiffs don't have access to the written history of marginal performers for possible use in a lawsuit. This sounds like good risk management advice, but it's not.
