The nation will be honoring the 9/11 dead, both civilian and public safety, for the next month or so. That's the way it should be. We should honor the Americans who died that day. I also think it's important to honor the first responders who lived through 9/11, who helped the victims, who combed the rubble, who saved lives and recovered bodies.

One of the reasons that agencies are more complacent about WMD training now than immediately after 9/11 is the economics of the issue. Training costs money and pulls officers off the line. Another reason that WMD training is unpopular at many agencies is that it's not by any means a pleasant thing to do.

Experts say you deserve praise for being willing to withstand ridicule and even let bad guys win in court to prevent attacks. "If you ask me what law enforcement has done best since 9/11 is that they are stopping these plots in the beginning stages before they go operational," says E.J. Kimball, managing director of terrorism expert Steven Emerson's Investigative Project on Terrorism.

Many Americans have failed to learn the real message of that day. We were not attacked by a small band of zealots with box cutters but an ideology that still thrives in the world and must be defeated before there can be peace.

As the terrible events of Sept. 11, 2001, began to unfold, many Americans watched the burning North Tower of the World Trade Center on their TVs and wondered what kind of horrific airline “accident” had taken place in Manhattan. Then as the live TV cameras rolled, United Airlines Flight 175 sliced into the South Tower, confirming the worst fears. This was no accident; it was enemy action.
