Police Week 2011: Candlelight Vigil
The 2011 candlelight vigil during National Police Week in Washington, D.C., drew up to 20,000 officers, police survivors, dignitaries, and other law enforcement supporters to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial for the reading of 316 names added to the wall this year. The vigil is organized by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF).

Police Week 2011: What They Left Behind
To honor their sacrifice, the names of 316 law enforcement officers were engraved onto the marble walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. The men and women who served their communities as officers, deputies, troopers and agents were honored during National Police Week, and well-wishers came to pay homage to their memories by leaving notes, photos, duty gear and other personal items. Obama did not attend the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund's candlelight vigil Friday evening. He also skipped the Peace Officer's Memorial Service on Sunday on the West Front of the U.S. Capitol. President George W. Bush attended the Peace Officer's Memorial every year except one.

AG Holder: 2011 Duty Deaths 'Simply Unacceptable'
Duty deaths have spiked in 2011 with a 20% increase through March 22 compared to 2010. So far in 2011, 49 officers have died in the line of duty, according to preliminary data from NLEOMF. The spike in duty deaths began in 2010 after a two-year decline. There were 162 LODDs, 45 more than 2009.

Last year’s total of 120 officers killed in the line of duty was a significant reduction from the 169 killed in 2011 and the lowest number since 1959. All of the speakers at this year’s vigil praised this trend as a move in the right direction and focused on the need to further reduce line-of-duty deaths.
