The South Bend officer who fatally shot a man in June has resigned from the agency, citing stress related to the media attention the incident has garnered.
According to the Indianapolis Star, Sergeant Ryan O'Neill—who shot and killed 54-year-old Eric Logan on Father's Day—submitted a resignation letter to Chief Scott Ruszkowski on Monday.
Ruszkowski said, "I am in receipt of his resignation letter. I will have no further comment at this time."
O'Neill was investigating a series of vehicle thefts when police say he saw Logan partially in a vehicle. Logan emerged from the car and reportedly approached O'Neil while brandishing a knife.
Logan was transported to a nearby hospital in a squad car, where he was pronounced dead.
