California's No. 2 Sheriff's Agency Begins Massive Layoffs
Riverside County (Calif.) Sheriff Stan Sniff has mailed layoff notices to 800 full-time staffers and will begin implementing layoffs of deputies June 1 to help close budget gaps plaguing the county. The cuts could also cause reductions in jail operations.

Sheriff's Deputy to be Honored for Martial Arts Achievements
Chief Deputy Stanley L. Sniff, Jr., of the Riverside County (Calif.) Sheriff's Department, will be among those receiving awards for continued leadership in the martial arts community at the 2007 Masters Hall of Fame event on Aug. 11 in Costa Mesa, Calif. The event will be hosted by "Big John" McCarthy, longtime referee for the Ultimate Fighting Championship as well as an LAPD police officer and certified law enforcement trainer.

Riverside (Calif.) Police Officer Loren Mitchell became the first officer in his agency to work with a police dog when he was partnered up with "PAL" in 1958. Chief Sergio Diaz and the City Council honored the now-retired Officer Mitchell for this historical achievement at a City Hall ceremony.
