A Terre Haute, IN, police officer was killed Friday evening in an exchange of gunfire between multiple officers and a homicide suspect. The suspect was also killed.

The slain officer has been identified as Patrolman Rob Pitts of Sullivan, Ind., a 16-year-veteran of the Terre Haute Police Department.

The name of the suspect, who barricaded himself inside an apartment complex has not yet been released.

Terre Haute Officer Ryan Adamson told the Indianapolis Star that Pitts' investigation of a homicide in Terre Haute earlier in the day had led him to the Garden Quarters apartment complex on the city's south side.

"We were trying to apprehend a homicide suspect, when our officer was shot and killed," Adamson said. The suspect in that homicide opened fire when he was approached by four investigators, according to Adamson.
