The Florida police chief who failed to arrest George Zimmerman immediately after the fatal shooting of teenager Trayvon Martin has been fired by Sanford's city manager.

Chief Bill Lee, who temporarily stepped aside in March, was dismissed due to the "the escalating divisiveness that has taken hold of the city," said Sanford City Manager Norton Bonaparte in a statement reported by the Miami Herald.

Richard Myers, former chief of the Colorado Springs Police Department, assumed the duties of interim chief in May.
